East Coast Storms: Massachusetts Flooding Submerges Cars and a Tornado Destroys Buildings on Second Day of Extreme Weather

Torrential rainfall across Massachusetts has seen entire cars submerged and buildings destroyed as the East Coast was washed out by flooding for a second day.

A tornado touched down in Mattapoisett – around an hour’s drive from Boston – on Tuesday as the state bore the brunt of the weather moving through the region.

Severe rainfall deluged New England throughout the day, causing travel chaos, flooding roads, and sending officials scrambling – with flood warnings introduced in several states and water rescue teams deployed across the western part of Vermont.

The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado struck the small village after investigating the damage, saying it reached winds of almost 100mph and was roughly 300 yards wide.

Stunning footage revealed how the potent gusts uprooted a huge tree in its path, and a witness told NBC5 the system took down 30 trees in her neighborhood alone.

Officials also warned the storm may have destroyed the town’s water treatment center, although there were no reported injuries or deaths as a result of the twister.

‘Well, I saw trees flying sideways, you know? Branches, you know, going sideways,’ said one Mattapoisett resident to WCVB. ‘It was like super, super windy.’

Tornado warnings were also issued earlier in the day in several other central Massachusetts towns, and the storm system dumped heavy rains across the region that caused rapid flash flooding.

Flood watches remain in effect throughout Tuesday evening across central and eastern Massachusetts, where numerous cars could be seen fully submerged following the deluge.
